Frequently Asked Questions

Videos won’t play, or keep buffering

Video content needs an internet connection to play, as it streams directly from YouTube. If a video won’t play or keeps pausing:

  • Check you have a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection

  • Try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round

  • Close the app fully and reopen it

  • If the problem continues, the video may be temporarily unavailable on YouTube - try again later

Downloaded episodes are taking up storage space

Audio episodes you have downloaded for offline listening are saved to your device. You are always in control of these.

To delete downloads, go to Settings within the app, find the list of downloaded episodes, and select the ones you no longer need. You can also clear journal entries, prayer list items, and bookmarks from the same Settings screen. Deleting a downloaded episode doesn’t remove it from the app - you can always stream or download it again later.

Why can’t I download videos for offline viewing?

Only audio episodes can be downloaded for offline listening. Video content always needs an internet connection.

This is because our video content is hosted on YouTube, and YouTube’s terms don’t allow videos to be downloaded for offline viewing through apps like ours. We know this can be inconvenient if you’re somewhere without signal, and we’re sorry for any frustration - it’s simply outside our control.

How do I change the playback speed?

While listening to an audio devotional, look for the speed control on the player screen. You can choose from 0.75x (slower) up to 2x (faster), with normal speed in between.

New episodes aren’t appearing

New audio devotionals are added daily, and new videos are added regularly too. If you’re not seeing the latest episode:

  • Pull down on the episode list to refresh it (place your finger near the top of the list and drag downwards)

  • Check your internet connection

  • Make sure you’re looking in the right tab - daily devotional, devotional videos, sermons, or blog

The app isn’t working properly

If something doesn’t seem right, these steps usually help:

  • Close the app completely and reopen it

  • Check whether an app update is available in the App Store or Google Play, and install it if so

  • Restart your device

  • If personal data such as journal entries or prayer list items appears to be missing after an update, please contact us straight away using the details below

  • If the problem continues, please get in touch and let us know what’s happening

How do I leave a comment on a video?

Tap the “Join the conversation on YouTube” button on any video player screen. This opens the video directly in the YouTube app (or your browser if YouTube isn’t installed), where you can read and leave comments as normal. Rob reads every comment and loves hearing what spoke to you.

What do the Scripture references in show notes do?

In the show notes on the episode player screen, Scripture references such as John 3:16 or Psalm 23 are tappable. Tap any reference to see the full verse text - retrieved live from the NLT - displayed within the app, without opening a browser.

How does the series progress bar work?

On the episode list, episodes that belong to a teaching series are grouped together with a progress bar showing how many you have completed - for example, “3 of 6 episodes completed.” This is calculated automatically from the episodes you have marked as played.

Frontline Formation Blog

How do I read blog posts in the app?

Go to the Blog tab to see Rob’s latest articles from Frontline Formation. Tap any post to open it in a comfortable reading view. Pull down on the post list to check for new articles.

How do I change the text size while reading?

While reading a post, look for the font size control - you can make the text larger or smaller to suit you. This preference is remembered for future articles.

How do I save a post to read later?

Tap the save icon on any post to add it to your Saved Posts. You’ll find everything you’ve saved in the Blog section, ready to pick up whenever you have time.

Can I write a reflection on a blog post?

Yes. Just like with audio and video episodes, you can tap “Write a reflection” on any blog post to add a private note in your Journal.

How do I comment on a blog post?

Tap “Read and comment on Substack” at the end of any post. This opens the article on frontlineformation.co.uk, where you can read and add a comment as normal. Rob loves hearing your thoughts.

Your Personal Content

Everything you write in the journal or prayer list is private to you. It is stored on your device, and optionally in your own iCloud or Google account if sync is turned on - never shared with us or anyone else.

How do I use the Reflection Journal?

The Reflection Journal lets you write a personal note after listening to or watching any episode, or reading any blog post.

  • On the episode or post screen, tap “Write a reflection”

  • Type your thoughts and save the entry

  • To read past reflections, go to the Journal section of the app - entries are listed in date order, newest first

  • Tap any entry to read or edit it

  • To delete an entry, swipe it or use the delete option within the entry

How do I use the Prayer List?

The Prayer List is a simple personal tool for keeping track of things you want to pray about.

  • Go to the Prayer List screen, accessible from the navigation menu

  • Tap “Add prayer item” to add something new - you can include a title and optional notes

  • When a prayer is answered, tap “Mark as answered” - it will move to the Answered Prayers section with the date recorded

  • Answered prayers are kept so you can look back over time

  • To delete an item, swipe it

How do I use Episode Bookmarks?

While listening to an audio episode, tap the bookmark button to save your current position.

  • You can add a short label to remind yourself why you bookmarked that moment

  • To find your bookmarks, go to the Bookmarks section of the app

  • Tap any bookmark to open that episode and jump straight to the saved moment

  • To delete a bookmark, swipe it

Will I lose my journal and prayer list if I delete the app?

Not if you have sync turned on. On iPhone, your journal, prayer list, bookmarks, and preferences sync to your private iCloud account. On Android, they can sync to a private area of your Google Drive. If sync is on, reinstalling the app will restore everything automatically.

If sync is off, this content is stored only on your device and will be lost if you delete the app. You can turn sync on at any time in Settings.

Listening Streaks and Stats

What is a listening streak?

A listening streak counts how many days in a row you have completed at least one episode. You can see your current streak, your longest ever streak, total episodes completed, and total listening time in the My Progress screen.

If a full day passes without completing an episode, your streak resets to zero - but your longest streak is always saved. Don’t be discouraged if you miss a day - every day is a fresh start.

Home Screen Widget

How do I add the widget to my home screen?

On iPhone: long-press an empty area of your home screen until the icons jiggle, tap the + button in the top corner, search for Battle Drill, choose your preferred widget size, and tap Add Widget.

On Android: long-press an empty area of your home screen, choose Widgets, find Battle Drill in the list, and drag it onto your home screen.

The widget isn’t updating

The widget refreshes automatically each day when a new episode is available. If it seems stuck, make sure your device has an internet connection, open the main app and pull to refresh the episode list, or try removing the widget and adding it again.

Daily Reminder

How do I set a daily reminder?

Go to Settings within the app, find Daily Reminder, switch it on, and choose the time you’d like to be reminded each day.

How do I change or turn off my reminder?

Go to Settings, then Daily Reminder, at any time to change the time or switch it off.

My reminder notifications aren’t appearing

  • Check that you have allowed notifications for Battle Drill in your device settings

  • On iPhone: go to Settings, then Notifications, then Battle Drill

  • On Android: go to Settings, then Apps, then Battle Drill, then Notifications

  • Make sure the reminder is also switched on within the app itself

Mindful Minutes (iPhone)

What is the Mindful Minutes feature?

When you listen to an audio episode on iPhone, the app can log your listening time as Mindful Minutes in Apple Health. This is a way of recognising that time spent in Scripture is good for your whole self, not just your faith. The feature is entirely optional and only available on iPhone. The app never reads any health data - it only writes your listening sessions, with your permission.

How do I enable Mindful Minutes?

The first time you open the audio player, the app will ask whether it can log your listening to Apple Health. Tap Allow to enable it, or Don’t Allow to skip - the app works normally either way. You can turn this on or off at any time under Settings, then Log Mindful Minutes to Apple Health. You can also manage this in your iPhone’s Settings under Privacy and Security, then Health, then Battle Drill.

My listening sessions aren’t appearing in Apple Health

  • Check that the toggle is switched on in Settings within the app

  • Check that the app has permission to write to Apple Health in your device settings

  • Only sessions of one minute or longer are logged - very short listens are not recorded

  • Open the Health app and check the Mindfulness section - it may take a moment to appear after a session ends

I don’t want the app to log anything to Apple Health

No problem at all. Go to Settings within the app and turn off the Mindful Minutes toggle. You can also revoke permission entirely in your iPhone’s health settings - this has no effect on any other part of the app.

Syncing Across Your Devices

How do I turn on sync?

Go to Settings and switch on “Sync my data.” On iPhone this uses your private iCloud account; on Android, your private Google Drive. You’ll need to be signed into iCloud or your Google account on your device for this to work.

What gets synced?

Your journal entries, prayer list, bookmarks, saved blog posts, listening streaks, and preferences. Downloaded audio episodes are never synced - these stay local to each device to save space.

Is my synced data private?

Yes. It’s stored in your own personal iCloud or Google account, under their privacy protections. We never see it, and it’s never sent to us or stored on any server we control.

How do I turn sync off?

Go to Settings and switch off “Sync my data.” Your existing synced data stays safely in your iCloud or Google account - turning sync back on later will restore it.
