Privacy Policy for Battle Drill: Daily Devotional

Introduction
Thank you for using Battle Drill: Daily Devotional. This app is created and maintained by an individual developer - a Salvation Army officer based in the United Kingdom, not by a company or organisation.
We care about your privacy. This policy explains what information the app uses, what it doesn’t, and how it’s handled. We’ve tried to write it in plain English. If anything is unclear, please get in touch using the contact details at the end.
What Data We Collect (and What We Don’t)
We do not collect any personal data ourselves.
The app has no user accounts, no login, and no registration with us directly. You can use the app fully without ever providing your name, email address, or any other personal information to us.
The app stores the following information locally on your device:
Your playback position in audio episodes
A record of which audio episodes you have downloaded
Whether you have marked an episode or blog post as played/read
Personal reflections you write in the Reflection Journal
Prayer items you add to the Prayer List
Listening statistics and streaks
Your daily reminder time and reading font size preferences
Episode bookmarks and saved blog posts
Syncing across your devices (optional)
If you choose to enable sync, this information can also be backed up and synced across your own devices:
On iPhone, this uses Apple’s iCloud, stored in your private iCloud account
On Android, this uses Google Drive, stored in a private, app-specific area of your own Google Drive account that is not visible elsewhere in your Drive
In both cases:
This is entirely optional and can be turned off at any time in the app’s Settings
Your data is stored in your own personal Apple or Google account, under their respective privacy policies and security protections - we do not have access to it, cannot see it, and it is never sent to us or any server we control
This allows your journal, prayer list, bookmarks, and preferences to appear on your other devices, and to be restored automatically if you delete and reinstall the app
Downloaded audio episodes are never synced or backed up - only your written content, bookmarks, and preferences

Third-Party Services
The app brings together content from several outside services. When you use features connected to these services, their own privacy policies apply.
Buzzsprout (Audio Podcast)
Our daily audio devotional is hosted by Buzzsprout. When you stream or download an episode, your device connects directly to Buzzsprout’s servers to retrieve the audio file. Downloaded episodes are stored on your device for offline listening.

YouTube and Google (Video Content)
Our video content - Battle Drill Daily Devotional videos and Battle Ready Sermons - is hosted on YouTube. The app uses Google’s YouTube Data API to display video lists and view counts, and uses an embedded YouTube player to play videos within the app.
When you use these features, Google may collect information in line with its own privacy policy, including data such as cookies and viewing activity. This happens because Google provides these services, not because of anything our app does separately.

API.Bible / NLT.TO (Scripture Lookup)
When you tap a Scripture reference in an episode’s show notes, the app retrieves the verse text live from API.Bible, a Scripture API operated by the American Bible Society, under permission granted by Tyndale House Publishers for use of the New Living Translation (NLT).
The reference you tap is sent to API.Bible solely to retrieve the matching verse text. No personal or device-identifying information is included in this request beyond what is technically necessary to make a standard web request. Verse text is held only in temporary memory for the duration of your session and is not stored permanently on your device or transmitted anywhere else.
Frontline Formation Blog (Substack)
The app’s Blog section displays articles from Frontline Formation, Rob’s reflective writing blog, hosted on Substack at frontlineformation.co.uk. The app retrieves these articles using a standard RSS feed - no account, login, or personal data is exchanged with Substack to display this content.
If you choose to comment on a blog post, the app will direct you to the post on frontlineformation.co.uk in your browser or the Substack app, where Substack’s own privacy policy and terms apply. We do not collect, display, or store any comments or Substack account information within the app itself.

Push Notifications and Daily Reminders
The app includes a daily reminder feature that lets you choose a time each day to be reminded to listen to the devotional. This uses your device’s own notification system - it is a local notification, not an external push service. No information is sent to us or to any server when a reminder is set or delivered.
You will be asked for notification permission before this feature is enabled. You can turn reminders on or off at any time, and change the reminder time, within the app’s Settings screen. You can also withdraw notification permission at any time in your device’s notification settings.
Home Screen Widget
The app offers a home screen widget showing today’s daily devotional episode. The widget uses content already fetched by the main app and stored locally on your device - it does not make any additional connections to external services. No new data is collected or transmitted by the widget.
Health and Wellness Apps
Apple Health (iPhone only)
On iPhone, the app can log your audio listening sessions as Mindful Minutes in the Apple Health app. This is entirely optional and requires your permission before it is enabled.
If you choose to enable this:
Each listening session of one minute or longer is recorded as a mindful session in Apple Health, with the start and end time of your listening
This data is written to your personal Health app on your device only
We never read, access, or transmit any data from Apple Health - the app writes only
You can turn this off at any time in the app’s Settings screen, or revoke Health permissions at any time in your iPhone’s Settings under Privacy and Security, then Health, then Battle Drill
This feature is not available on Android.
Analytics, Advertising, and Tracking
The app does not currently use analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind.
If this changes - for example, if crash reporting or usage analytics tools such as Firebase are added - this policy will be updated to explain what is collected, why, how long it is kept, and how you can opt out where possible. We will update the “Last updated” date above whenever this happens.
Children’s Privacy
The app is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from children. As explained above, the app does not collect personal information from any user, of any age.
If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below so we can address it, though as no personal data is collected through the app, this is unlikely to arise.
Data Retention and Deletion
You are always in control of your data. You can manage or delete the following from within the app’s Settings screen:
Downloaded audio episodes
Journal entries
Prayer list items
Episode bookmarks
Saved blog posts
Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data from that device. If you have sync turned on, your journal, prayer list, bookmarks, and preferences remain safely in your own iCloud or Google account, and will be restored if you reinstall the app or sign in on another device. If you have sync turned off, this data is lost when the app is deleted, as it only ever existed on that device.
We hold no copies of any of this information on our own systems, so there is nothing for us to delete on our end.
Your Rights Under UK GDPR
As a UK-based developer, we aim to follow the principles of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
In practice, because the app does not collect or hold any personal data about you on our own systems, most data protection rights - such as the right to access, correct, or delete personal data held by us - do not apply, as there is simply nothing held by us to act on. Any data you choose to sync is held in your own Apple or Google account, governed by their respective policies.
If this position changes in future, this policy will be updated to explain your rights in full, including how to exercise them. If you have any questions or concerns about your privacy in relation to this app, you are welcome to contact us at any time.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example if new features are added to the app. Any changes will be reflected on this page, along with an updated “Last updated” date at the top. We encourage you to review this policy occasionally to stay informed.
