There are days when our minds seem determined to solve everything at once.
The email. The bill. The decision. The appointment. The conversation we keep replaying.
We tell ourselves that peace will come once everything is sorted.
But Psalm 46 offers another way.
“Be still, and know that I am God!”
Stillness is not pretending the problem has disappeared. It is not giving up. And it is certainly not doing nothing.
Stillness is trust.
It is the moment when we stop trying to hold the whole world together and remember that God already holds it.
That can be hard for those of us who like to help, organise, plan and solve problems. We may even feel guilty when we stop.
Yet prayer is not wasted time.
It is where we remember who God is.
Perhaps that is why a few quiet minutes with God can change the shape of an entire day. The problem may still be there when we finish praying. The difficult decision may remain. The future may still feel uncertain.
But something inside us has shifted.
We no longer need to see every step.
We only need enough light for the next one.
So name what is troubling you today.
The email.
The bill.
The scan.
The decision.
Place it into God’s hands.
Then ask a much smaller question:
“God, what is the next right step?”
You do not need the whole plan.
You need his presence.
And perhaps that is where peace begins - not when the storm finally stops, but when we discover that God is already with us in the middle of it.
