You don't have to feel ready
There’s a moment in Isaiah 6 that I keep coming back to.
Isaiah has just had this overwhelming vision of God - smoke filling the temple, angels crying “holy, holy, holy.” And understandably, he’s on his knees. He’s a mess. He feels completely unworthy.
But then something shifts. The coal touches his lips. His guilt is taken away. And he hears this:
“Whom should I send as a messenger? Who will go for us?”
And Isaiah - still trembling, still barely standing - says simply: “Here I am. Send me.”
That’s it. Not “I’ll go once I’ve sorted myself out.” Not “I’ll go when I feel more ready.” Just: here I am. Now.
I think a lot of us have quietly filed ourselves under “spectators” in God’s story. We believe in the mission. We pray for it, give to it, share posts about it. But somewhere deep down, we’ve assumed the actual doing of it is for someone more qualified, more confident, more prepared.
Jesus didn’t share that assumption. Standing in the upper room with his frightened, doubting, recently-hiding disciples, he said: “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
Not once you’ve cleaned yourself up. Not once you’ve earned the badge. Now.
Today’s devotional explores three simple things to hold onto: the sending is personal, it’s ordinary, and it comes with presence - you are never sent alone.
Your tiny holy step for today? Before you go somewhere ordinary today - a staff room, a school gate, a neighbour’s front step - just pause and whisper: “Lord, I’m here. I’m available. Use me.”
You don’t need a plan. You just need to show up.
