There are days when even a small decision can feel strangely heavy.
You know something needs to change. A cupboard needs clearing. An email you’ve been putting off needs answering. A conversation needs having. A habit needs attention. But instead of starting, you keep thinking about the best way to do it.
You want the right plan, the right words, the right time, the right mood.
And before long, nothing happens.
Sometimes we stay stuck not because we do not want to change, but because we want to change perfectly.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 says, “Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.”
That is such a simple picture.
A farmer can study the sky all day. There will always be another cloud to watch. Another reason to wait. Another condition that is not quite right.
But eventually, seed has to touch soil.
And perhaps that is the quiet word God has for you today.
You do not have to sort everything today.
You only need to take the next faithful step.
Not next week’s step, not the whole plan, just the small act of trust that belongs to this moment.
Perfectionism often sounds responsible. It tells us, “Do not rush. Get this right.” But underneath, it can become fear. What if I choose badly? What if I regret it? What if I start and cannot finish?
So we wait.
But grace does not ask you to control the whole journey. Grace asks you to trust God with the step in front of you.
Small does not mean pointless.
A single phone call may not solve a relationship, but it can reopen a door. Ten minutes tidying one drawer will not transform your home, but it can begin to lift the weight. Saying, “I need help,” may not fix the problem, but it can break the silence.
Small steps count because they move us from thought into trust.
Not only that , but unfinished does not mean failed.
I noticed this recently whilst sorting through my filing. I kept putting it off because I knew I could not finish everything in one go. Then I realised how odd that was. I did not need an empty desk by lunchtime. I just needed to deal with what I could in the time available.
That small start changed the whole feel of the task.
We often imagine progress has to look dramatic. God is often content to meet us in something much quieter.
And, you are allowed to be a learner.
You will not always know the best choice before you make it. Sometimes wisdom comes as you move. Sometimes God guides by closing one door and opening another. Sometimes you discover that a decision can be adjusted.
Your identity in Christ is not hanging on your ability to get every choice right.
You are loved before the task is finished.
You are held while you are still learning.
You are not a project God is frustrated with. You are his beloved child.
So, choose one thing you already know needs attention. Not five things. One.
Send the message. Put the appointment in the diary. Clear one surface. Begin the form. Ask the question. Take the short walk. Pray one honest sentence.
Do not wait until you feel completely ready.
Let your next step be small enough to do today.
And when you take it, do not rush straight to the next thing. Notice that you moved. Thank God for the grace to begin.
Question for you: what is one small step you know you need to take today?
You can share it in the comments if that would help make it real.
Let’s pray.
Jesus, thank you that you do not ask me to have everything sorted. Quiet the fear that says I must get every choice right. Give me grace for one faithful step today. Remind me that I am loved, held, and guided as I go. Amen.
Come back tomorrow, when we will ask a deeper question: what remains when life gets shaken? We will look at what can truly hold us when the things we rely on begin to fall away.
