Have you ever known something needed to change, prayed about it sincerely, and then wondered whether you were supposed to do anything next?
Maybe you have prayed for more patience, but the next difficult person still tests you. You have asked God to help you forgive, but the conversation still needs to happen. You have prayed for courage, but the email is still sitting in your drafts.
So what do we do? Do we wait for God to change us, or do we get moving?
Philippians 2 gives us a beautiful answer.
Paul says, “Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
At first, “work hard” can sound worrying. It can sound as though salvation depends on us trying hard enough, behaving well enough, or becoming spiritual enough.
But notice what Paul does not say.
He does not say work for your salvation.
He says work out what God has already begun within you.
And then comes the reason: “For God is working in you.”
That changes everything.
Christian growth is not about earning God’s love. It is not about proving that we deserve grace. And it is not about sitting still until God somehow changes us without our involvement.
Grace invites a response.
Think of the CityAlight song title, Yet Not I but Through Christ in Me. That little phrase captures the tension so well. We really do follow Jesus. We really do choose, practise, serve, forgive, apologise, give, pray, and persevere. But underneath all of that is the grace of Christ already at work.
Paul says something similar in 1 Corinthians 15:10. He speaks about working hard, but then makes clear that it was God’s grace working through him.
So effort is not the enemy of grace.
Trying to earn God’s favour is.
There is a big difference.
I am Rob, and welcome to Day 6 of our series.
Perhaps God is already stirring something in you today.
Maybe you know you need to apologise. Perhaps there is a conversation you have been avoiding. Maybe generosity has been on your mind. Perhaps you sense that your prayer life needs a fresh rhythm, or that you need to stop feeding a habit that keeps pulling you away from God.
You may be waiting until you feel completely ready.
But what if readiness is not the point?
What if the next step is simply to agree with what God is already doing within you?
You do not need to fix everything today.
You do not need a five-year plan for spiritual growth.
You may only need one faithful step.
Send the message.
Make the call.
Give the gift.
Turn off the screen.
Open the Bible.
Say sorry.
Ask for help.
Take ten quiet minutes with God.
Small obedience matters because it is often where grace becomes visible.
God gives the desire. God gives the strength. But he still invites you to move.
That is why spiritual growth is a partnership of grace. God is not standing at a distance, waiting to see whether you can manage it. He is already at work within you.
Your part is not to create the power.
Your part is to respond.
So here is today’s question for the comments:
What small next step do you sense God nudging you towards?
You do not need to share anything deeply personal. Just name the step if that would help you make it real.
Let us pray.
Father, thank you that you are already at work within me. Give me the willingness to respond to your grace and the strength to take the next obedient step. Keep me from trying to earn your love, and keep me from using grace as an excuse to stay still. Help me trust your work and join you in it today. Amen.
You do not have to become a different person by your own strength.
God is working while you work.
He is already there, helping you move forward.
So take the next faithful step, and trust that his grace is already there before you.
