There are days when yesterday seems much kinder than today.
Perhaps work has become difficult. Home feels unsettled. You are tired. A change you once welcomed now feels uncertain. Suddenly an old job, old home or earlier season begins to glow in your memory.
We all do this.
When we are weary, memory can become an editor. It keeps the photographs of smiling faces but loses the argument before them. It remembers the good meal but forgets the worry that sat beside it.
Israel discovered this in the wilderness.
After God rescued them from slavery in Egypt, life became uncertain. Food was scarce. The future felt frightening. Before long, they were remembering the meals they had enjoyed in Egypt.
They remembered the menu.
They forgot the chains.
That does not make them foolish. It makes them human.
And there is a gentle warning here for us.
A hard present does not mean the past was better. Nor does difficulty mean God has stopped leading you.
Sometimes the place God has brought us into feels less comfortable precisely because freedom can be unfamiliar.
So perhaps today’s prayer needs to be very simple:
“God, help me remember the whole story.”
Remember what was good. But remember honestly.
Remember the struggle too.
Remember the doors God closed. The habits he helped you leave. The lonely season you survived. The frightening appointment you got through. The moment when you wondered whether you would cope.
Then remember this:
God did not leave you there.
You can say, “Today is hard,” without saying, “Going backwards would be better.”
Both truth and hope can sit together.
If today feels heavy, you do not need to manufacture optimism. Just remember faithfully.
God has carried you before.
And he is still with you now.
