When not being enough is exactly enough
There’s a moment in today’s devotional that I keep turning over in my mind.
Peter and John have just watched a man who had never walked in his life get up and start leaping around the Temple courts. The crowd goes wild. People are staring at Peter and John like they’re celebrities. And Peter’s response is remarkable. He doesn’t take a bow. He doesn’t even enjoy the moment. He turns straight to the crowd and says - in effect - why are you looking at us?
That kind of humility isn’t false modesty. It’s something deeper. Peter genuinely knew he hadn’t done this. He was as surprised as anyone. All he had done was say the name of Jesus, and the power had come from somewhere far beyond himself.
And here’s what I find so freeing about that: it means none of us have to pretend to be more capable than we are.
You don’t need to have it all together before God can use you. You don’t need to be strong, polished, or sorted. Paul asked God to take away his weakness. God said no - and explained that his power is actually most visible when Paul is at his most limited.
That’s the invitation for us today. Not to manufacture strength we don’t have, but to admit the weakness we do - and watch what God does with it.
I’ve put together five practical steps for living this out in today’s devotional. I hope it helps.
