"When I Am Afraid" - the two words that gave me room to breathe
There’s a line in the Psalms I keep coming back to this week.
It’s short. Just one sentence. But it’s one of the most honest things I’ve ever read.
“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” - Psalm 56:3
Notice that word when.
Not if. Not back when I used to be afraid. David - warrior, king, man after God’s own heart - is writing this in real time, while his enemies have him surrounded. He’s genuinely frightened. And he’s not pretending otherwise.
What strikes me is what he doesn’t write. He doesn’t say, “I’ve conquered my fear and now I trust God.”
He says, “I’m afraid. And right here, in the middle of this - I choose to trust.”
That word choose is the whole thing, isn’t it? Trust isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a decision you make. Often a quiet, costly, courageous one.
In today’s devotional I talk about three things that have helped me when fear has felt louder than faith. One of them comes from Jesus himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane - and it might just reframe everything you thought you knew about what it means to be a person of faith.
I also share a simple prayer. Nothing fancy. Just honest.
If you’re carrying something heavy today, this one’s for you.
