Have you ever rushed a choice just to escape the strain of waiting?
Most of us recognise that quiet knot in the stomach. Perhaps an unresolved situation at work is grinding on, a family matter is hanging in the air, or you simply want clarity about the next step. Not knowing what comes next feels exhausting. In our hurry to make the discomfort stop, we often lunge forward. We send the hasty email. We make an impulsive promise. We force a door open, telling ourselves that any decision is better than sitting with uncertainty.
Yet Scripture gently reminds us that waiting is never wasted time with God.
In Numbers chapter 9, we find the people of God journeying through the wilderness. They had no map, only God’s visible presence. Verses 18 to 22 tell us:
“At the Lord’s command the people of Israel broke camp, and at his command they set up camp. As long as the cloud stayed over the Tabernacle, they remained in place. If the cloud stayed over the Tabernacle for a long time, the Israelites stayed at their posts and did not move on. Sometimes the cloud was there for only a few days, so they followed the Lord’s command and stayed under cloud, then moved on. Sometimes the cloud stayed only overnight and lifted the next morning; day or night, when the cloud lifted, they broke camp and moved on. Whether the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the people of Israel stayed in camp and did not move on. But as soon as it lifted, they broke camp and moved on.”
Notice that phrase: whether two days, a month, or a whole year. Israel did not move simply because they were restless. They did not push forward just to feel productive. They learnt to match their stride to God’s pace. When the cloud rested, their job was simply to abide.
Waiting like that is not easy. It cuts against our natural desire for control. We assume that if nothing visible is moving around us, nothing significant is happening within us. Yet God often does His deepest work while the cloud stays in place. He uses the quiet lull to deepen our trust, soften our impatience, and remind us that our future rests securely in His hands, not our cleverness. You do not have to hurry ahead of Him to be safe.
So what might that mean for today?
Here is one small act of faith. When you feel that familiar urge to rush a decision—especially at work, or during a tense conversation—deliberately pause. Before you respond, take two quiet breaths, whisper a prayer, and seek some wise counsel instead of forcing an answer. Give God room to move before you do.
Question for you: where in your life right now are you feeling tempted to rush ahead, instead of waiting for God’s guidance? Share your thoughts below; reading your comments always encourages others walking through similar seasons.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
You know how quickly my heart grows restless when the way ahead seems unclear. Forgive me for the times I rush forward just to escape the strain of waiting. When uncertainty feels heavy, grant me the grace to be still. Teach me to trust Your presence and Your timing, knowing You guide me with perfect wisdom. Help me to rest where You place me today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Thank you so much for joining me today. And tomorrow, we’ll think about what happens when our own hope feels thin, and why asking someone else to pray with us can be the bravest step of all.
