The person you haven't forgiven yet
You know who I mean.
You don’t need to think hard. Their name came to mind before you’d finished reading that sentence.
Maybe it was something they said. Maybe it was something they did - or didn’t do. Maybe it was years ago, and part of you can’t believe it still has this much power. But here you are. Still carrying it.
In today’s devotional, I’m sitting with one of the most uncomfortable verses in the New Testament. Hebrews 12:15 doesn’t ease you in gently. It just says: “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”
Watch out. That’s warning language. And the image isn’t a fire - something dramatic you’d notice. It’s a root. Quiet. Underground. Doing its work out of sight, until one day you realise the whole garden looks different.
The theologian Lewis Smedes said it better than I ever could: “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”
Here’s what I want you to know. Forgiveness isn’t about saying it didn’t hurt. It’s not about letting someone off the hook. It’s about unhooking yourself - and asking God to do in you what you honestly cannot do alone.
That’s the invitation in today’s video.
I won’t promise it’s easy. I’m still working through it in some of my own relationships. But there’s one small step I’d love to share with you - and a short prayer you can say right where you are.
