The investment that never loses its value
Dear friend.
I’ve been thinking about something Jesus said that I find quietly radical every time I come back to it.
He tells his followers to sell their possessions and give to those in need - and that when they do, they’re storing up treasure in heaven. Treasure, he says, that can’t be stolen, can’t be eaten by moths, and doesn’t fade. (Luke 12:33)
That’s a pretty different way of thinking about money and giving. Most of us - and I include myself here - have been trained to hold on. To save. To protect what we have. And there’s wisdom in being responsible with what we’re given. But Jesus seems to be saying something more than that. He’s saying that what we give away generously, in his name, isn’t really gone. It’s invested somewhere far more secure.
I knew a woman who gave quietly even when her own resources were stretched. When I asked her why, she simply said: “I can’t outgive God. He’s never failed me yet.”
Her joy wasn’t in her bank balance. It was in something deeper.
This week’s devotional explores that idea - what it looks like to hold things with open hands, and why generosity might be the wisest investment any of us can make.
