The Freedom of Letting Go
I’ve been thinking about hands lately.
Not in an abstract way - in a very practical, personal one. Because I’ve spent a fair bit of my life with my hands gripped tightly around things I was convinced I needed to hold: plans, outcomes, reputation, the sense that everything was under control.
And what I’ve found, again and again, is this: you can’t receive what God is offering when your hands are already full.
Paul writes in Philippians 2 that Jesus - fully God - chose to let go. He didn’t cling to power or position. He emptied himself, not recklessly, but in faith. And through that surrender, you and I received something we could never have earned: grace, life, a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
That stops me in my tracks every time I read it.
Jesus didn’t let go because he had nothing to lose. He let go because he trusted the Father completely. And the Father honoured it.
In today’s devotional, I sit with this question: what are you holding onto right now? Fear? Control? Comfort you’re too scared to release? What might God be inviting you to open your hands to today?
Learning to let go isn’t failure. It’s one of the deepest acts of faith we can choose.
I explore all of this - including a moment from my own ministry where I had to open my hands and trust - in today’s 5-minute video.
