In 2 Samuel 24:3 (NLT), King David’s desire to count his people wasn’t about strategy - it was about pride. Even Joab, a rough and battle-worn general, warned David against it. But David pressed on. The result? Deep loss, regret, and a painful reminder that when we try to prove our worth, we often end up drifting from grace.
Pride is subtle. It rarely looks like arrogance. Often, it looks like control - wanting to measure our success, to claim credit, to cling to outcomes. It’s in the quiet corners of our hearts where we decide to push God to the margins. But God doesn’t shame us in our pride. Like he did with David, he waits with mercy, offering a return to grace through humility.
This devotional reminds us that God’s voice still breaks through pride’s noise. In The Salvation Army, we often see how pride can creep even into service, leadership, or mission. But true kingdom work begins when we step down and let God lead - when we exchange ego for grace.
What stronghold of pride might you need to surrender today? This episode is a gentle yet honest invitation to choose honesty over ego, and humility over self-sufficiency. You don’t have to climb. You only have to kneel.
