Are you awake today?
Good morning, friend.
Let me ask you something before the day gets away from you.
Have you ever reached the evening and realised you weren’t really there for most of it? You turned up. You went through the motions. But your mind was somewhere else - running ahead, replaying the past, numbed by the noise. I think most of us know that feeling more than we’d like to admit.
Jesus talks about this in Luke 12. He tells a story about servants who are watching and waiting for their master to return. And what happens when he comes home and finds them ready? He sits them down. Puts on an apron. And serves them. It’s one of the most unexpected images in all the Gospels - a master who waits on his own servants.
But the point isn’t the surprise. The point is readiness. Being awake. Keeping your heart open, your hands free, your eyes up.
There’s a little story I tell about three brothers whose dad tells them to wait at the door. One stays alert. One drifts. One can’t leave his stuff behind. Only one makes the train. Jesus says: that’s what it looks like to be spiritually alive.
It’s not about knowing what comes next. It’s about being present enough to notice God moving - in the ordinary, unremarkable, Tuesday-afternoon moments of life.
So - are you awake today?
I’ve made a short 5-minute devotional on this passage that might be just what you need this morning. I’d love for you to watch it.
